What Are the Normal Vitamin D Levels by Age?
Vitamin D levels can be measured with a blood test. This test can indicate whether you have adequate levels, are at risk of a vitamin D deficiency, or have levels that are too high. Levels that are too low or too high could be harmful to your health.
Most adults need at least 15 micrograms (mcg)—or international units ( IU)—of vitamin D daily to maintain healthy levels. The amount recommended for children and older adults depends on age. The body needs vitamin D for various health functions, mainly to promote bone health. You can get vitamin D from sunshine, food, and dietary supplements.
Average Vitamin D Levels by Age Group
The hydroxy vitamin D blood test can determine vitamin D levels. The results may be reported in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) or nanomoles per liter (nmol/L).
Blood levels of vitamin D are generally interpreted the same for all age groups:
- Deficient: Below 12 ng/mL (below 30 nmol/L)
- Insufficient: 12 to ng/mL (30 to nmol/L)
- Sufficient: 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L) and over (but below toxicity levels)
- Risk of toxicity: Greater than 50 ng/mL ( nmol/L)

Many of my patients who come into the office for their physical exams ask to have their vitamin D levels checked. They may have a family member with osteoporosis, or perhaps they have had bone thinning themselves. Mostly, they want to know that they're doing everything they can to keep their bones strong. Vitamin D is critical for healthy bones. But when we check that blood level, how to act on the result is the subject of great controversy in medical-research land.
Pinpointing a "healthy" vitamin D level is tricky
So, what fryst vatten the current cutoff value at which people are considered "low," and thus at fara for developing bone thinning and having fractures? (We are talking about the blood level of hydroxy-vitamin D, which is usually measured in nanograms per milliliter.) Ah. This fryst vatten where there is a lot of argument.
In , the venerable Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued a report based on lengthy examination of data bygd a group of experts. To sum up, they estimated that a vitamin D level of 20 ng/mL or higher was adequate for good bone health, and subsequently a level below 20 was considered a vitamin D deficiency.
In my practice, and in most, it is not uncommon to see
