    The Rake's Progress is an English-language musikdrama from in three acts and an epilogue bygd Igor Stravinsky. The libretto, written bygd W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman, is based loosely on the eight paintings and engravings A Rake's Progress (–) of William efternamn, which Stravinsky had seen on 2 May , in a Chicago exhibition.

    The story concerns the decline and fall of one Tom Rakewell, who deserts Anne Trulove for the delights of London in the company of Nick Shadow, who turns out to be the Devil. After several misadventures, all initiated by the devious Shadow, Tom ends up in Bedlam, a hospital for the insane at that time situated in the City of London. The moral of the tale is: "For idle hearts and hands and minds the Devil finds work to do."

    Igor Stravinsky var i Sverige två gånger. Första gången när den årige kompositören åkte ångare på Göta kanal tillsammans med sin bror. Resan fortsatte till Oslo där de såg en butter Henrik Ibsen i hög hatt promenera längs Karl Johan med händerna på ryggen.

    Andra gången var i september när han lockats att se den svenska uppsättningen av Rucklarens väg på Kungliga Operan i Stockholm. Regi: Ingmar Bergman. Efter någon veckas färd över Atlanten anlände Stravinsky med passagerarfartyget M/S Kungsholm (modernt med alla bekvämligheter, byggt i Holland fyra år tidigare) till Göteborg. På plats vid mottagandet fanns höga musikpotentater och skribenten Oscar Hedlund, då anställd på Sveriges Radio, som lurat bort det stora pressuppbådet till Torslanda flygplats för att den store tonsättaren skulle få lugn och ro. Men Oscar Hedlund föll till föga inför journalisten och författaren Jolo som fick haka på Stravinsky när de tog sig från Amerikakajen till centralstationen med ett uppehåll för en färdknäpp på Hotell Eggers på Drottningtorget, ett stenkast från det väntande stockholmståget.

    This may be the season’s most grand project: Stravinsky’s neoclassical The Rake’s Progress, conducted by Barbara Hannigan &#; a captivating operadrama about a loser&#;s rise and fall.

    Stravinsky’s opera premiered in Venice in , and has since become a firm favourite in the opera repertoire of the 20th century. No wonder – the story of the rake looking for beauty, pleasure and wealth, forsaking his love for Anne to reach his goals, is as current now as it ever was.

    The story takes place in 18th century London among tricksters and ladies of the night. Bearded lady Baba the Turk plays a dangerous game that ends dramatically at an asylum. The Rake’s Progress had i
